    Thyroid Disease Awareness Month (January)

The Month of January is (was)…

    Thyroid Disease Awareness Month

Graves’ Disease Awareness WEEK was Jan 12-17, ‘09

Thyroid disease is too-important an awareness topic to have the month end without saying more about.  It’s something which affects SO many people – from 30 to 59 million Americans, alone (&200 million people at minimum worldwide)!  Oprah Winfrey has helped bring awareness to it, though, recently – by sharing what she’s been through, what with finding out (last year) that she had health issues related to it (kudos for doing that, Oprah!).

When the thyroid doesn't function correctly, it can affect every aspect of a person’s health.  The thyroid is involved with cellular energy & metabolism.  Thyroid hormone controls virtually every cell, tissue, and organ in the body. Thyroid disease can be the actual cause of weight issues (gain or loss), depression, fatigue, high cholesterol & hair loss in certain people.  For women (who are 7 times more likely to be affected by it), it can cause irregular menstrual periods, low sex drive, infertility, miscarriages, breastfeeding, difficult menopauses, & osteoporosis.

The vast majority of Americans with a thyroid condition don't know that they do; and their doctors may not suspect it.  Those who are diagnosed often have a hard time finding proper treatment.

Supermodel Kim Alexis is another famous person who’s been affected by thyroid disease:

National Volunteer Blood Donor Month (January)

    The Month of January is…

    National Volunteer Blood Donor Month

Have you donated blood, yet, this month (or ever)?

Every TWO SECONDS, someone in the U.S. needs blood!

Every day in our country, approximately 39,000 units of blood are required in hospitals and emergency treatment facilities for patients with cancer and other diseases, for organ transplant recipients, and to help save the lives of accident victims.

Blood products are needed year-round… so that means that, if you’re able to donate blood, you’re very much needed to help save lives!  If you are at least 17 years of age (some states permit younger people to donate with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and meet other donor requirements, you may be eligible to donate blood.  Up to THREE lives can be saved from just ONE blood donation!  You can be a hero by donating blood.

Peanut Products Recall Expanded (Again) (Jan. 29, '09)

    Peanut Products Recall Expanded (Again):

As per an update from the FDA (of late Thurs. evening), they are expanding the recall again, & are now also recalling dry and oil roasted peanuts and granulated peanuts.

It now includes all styles/sizes/lots beginning with a 7, 8, or 9 of peanuts, peanut butter, peanut paste, peanut meal & peanut granules originating from that one plant (Peanut Corporation of America [PCA]).   According to the FDA, “the recalled peanuts and peanut products were distributed nationwide to institutions, food service industries, and private label food companies as well as and in Canada, Haiti, Korea and Trinidad.”

The newest press release from the FDA on this latest expansion of the recall can be viewed HERE [click]

The FDA notes that “To date, no association has been found with major national brand name jars of peanut butter sold in grocery stores.”

In addition to the website links (see below), you can also call 1-800-CDC-INFO (1-800-232-4636) for up-to-date information. (“Representatives are available 24/7 to answer your questions in English and Spanish.”)

Please refer to previous Care-Aware post(s) [click here or scroll down, in blog] for more information, history & links for this recall.

Peanut Butter Recalls Continue to Spread (Jan. 28, ’09)

Peanut Butter Recalls Continue to Spread

More & more products have been added to the recalled foods, since the peanut-product recall was first announced.  I noticed, from the FDA’s postings, that there have been many more brands/foods/products added this past week.

Reports are now saying that federal inspectors found roaches, mold, & signs of a leaking roof (amongst numerous other problems) at the plant where the contamination originated from.

Read more in this current news report from the Associated Press on MSNBC:

“FDA finds multiple problems at peanut plant” (1/28/09) [click]

Most of the foods still fall into the same categories of food products (i.e. cakes, cookies, crackers, candies, cereals, snack/energy/granola bars, ice creams, some fruits/vegetables [i.e. apples, celery, etc.] with pb), but I noticed a couple other types of products in the listings of newer ones - such as dinners which had sauces which were made with peanut products, cookie doughs, Whole Foods brand “Carob Energee Nuggets” & bears, & numerous other bakery products.

Multiple brands of pet products are now involved - including dog & cat treats & bird foods.  (For more instructions on handling those, if you find that you have any of them, click HERE and recheck the list below.)

Please recheck the previous (now-updated) recall lists for all products:

Click HERE for Recall Links in Previous Care-Aware Post

(Linked reports should now show the updated versions)

The FDA  & CDC are advising consumers to “postpone eating other peanut butter containing products (such as cookies, crackers, cereal, candy and ice cream) until more information becomes available about which brands may be affected”; & also to consult your health care provider if you think you may have become ill from eating a peanut butter product.

For more information about the original recall, click on the link above (to the previous Care-Aware post).

    UPDATE (from late Thurs 1/29/09):

The recall has been expanded again - please see the newer Care-Aware posting for additional information.

Medication / Pharmaceutical Recalls (announced Jan 26, ’09)

    Medications & Pharmaceutical Products Recalled

    Medication Alerts / Pharmaceutical Recalls

     ETHEX Corporation

The ETHEX Corporation (which is a subsidiary of KV Pharmaceutical), issued a nationwide voluntary recall of numerous medications/drugs/pharmaceutical products “as a precautionary measure because they may have been manufactured under conditions that did not sufficiently comply with current Good Manufacturing Practices”, this Monday (Jan 26th, 2009).

Some of the products had been previously recalled, in specific lots, due to defects which had been found - including oversized tablets which were delivering higher-than-labeled doses.  Multiple additional products (quite a lengthy list!) are being removed to assure that no other defective products remain in the marketplace.

National Compliment Day (Jan. 28th, ’09)

    Today – Jan 28th, 2009 – is…

    National Compliment Day

    Compliment.jpg picture by GraphEmp

National Compliment Day grew out of the work which Kathy Chamberlin and Debby Hoffman do in their business and personal growth seminars, and from their book - Find Something Nice to Say The Power of Compliments.  This is the eleventh anniversary of its’ founding day in 1998.

Compliments can express praise, admiration, fondness, good wishes & regards, courtesy & respect or congratulations.

Compliments have many benefits for all involved:

    • They help people develop a sense of gratitude and appreciation of each other.

    • They raise awareness of the person’s positive qualities.

    • Compliments build closeness and trust.

    • They model, encourage, and reward kindness.

    • They make everyone feel great!

"Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones." – The Bible

Every day is a good day for a compliment!  See if you can give away 5 compliments each day!

"The best compliment to a child or a friend is the feeling you give him that he has been set free to make his own inquiries,

to come to conclusions that are right for him, whether or not they coincide with your own." - Alistair Cooke

Compliments can strengthen relationships, boost self-esteem, and increase self-confidence.  They have the ability to change the way we view ourselves and the world around us.  Compliments are good for our health!  Compliments are kindnesses which have the power to change lives; yet sometimes we might either hold back from giving them or have trouble receiving one.

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that can damage the eye's optic nerve & result in vision loss and blindness.

    • Two million people who have the glaucoma don't know they have it.

    • Glaucoma has no warning signs, and if left untreated, it can cause permanent vision loss.

    • It's important to visit your eye care professional and get a dilated eye exam every one to two years.

    • People with a family history of glaucoma, everyone over 60 years old, African Americans over 40 years old, are more likely to get the disease.

National Nurse Anesthetists Week (Jan. 25-31, ’09)

    This week - January 25th–31st, 2009 – is…

    National Nurse Anesthetists Week

Yesterday (Jan 25th) was National IV Nurse DAY

    452887532415250ck4.gif picture by GraphEmp

National Nurse Anesthetists Week was established by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists. It’s an opportunity for patients & families to recognize the important contributions which Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) make to America’s healthcare system.

This is the tenth year that Nurse Anesthetists will be celebrated for their “Proven, Professional and Passionate” care (the week’s theme) during the week which is designated to recognize their nearly 150 years of history & accomplishments in serving patients.

From Jackie Rowles, CRNA, MBA, MA, FAAPM, president of the 40,000-member AANA:

“Since the beginning of the nurse anesthesia specialty during the Civil War, we have played a key role in improving patient monitoring technology, anesthesia equipment, provider education, and overall patient safety. In fact, according to the Institute of Medicine, anesthesia today is nearly 50 times safer than it was during the 1980s, and the efforts of CRNAs have been monumental in the achievement of these results.”

Nurse anesthetists are advanced practice nurses who administer approximately 30 million anesthetics in the United States each year. They are at the forefront of anesthesia patient safety, practicing in every type of setting where anesthesia is needed. CRNAs are the sole anesthesia providers in nearly two-thirds of all rural hospitals, and have been the main provider of anesthesia care to U.S. service men and women on the front lines of battle since World War I.

“I believe I speak for the majority of today’s CRNAs when I say that one of the most fulfilling parts of my job is reassuring patients that I will be by their side throughout their entire procedure, monitoring every beat of their heart and every breath that they take, and ensuring the safe provision of anesthesia and the effective treatment of pain,” Rowles said.

    [Source: AANA]

Often patients are asleep or sedated while under the care of a nurse anesthetist in the OR, and may not recall that a nurse anesthetist is caring for them. Patients often associate their anesthesia experience with the fading of operating room sounds and activities only to safely awaken later in the recovery room. But while their patients sleep, CRNAs remain vigilant during the procedure—checking their patients’ vital signs, adjusting their anesthesia, and bringing them back to consciousness when the surgery is complete.

Red & Gold are said to attract happiness & wealth.  Wearing a new outfit in the colors is supposed to be even luckier.  Poems are often written on red paper; & "lucky money" is given to children (& others) in red envelopes. Red symbolizes fire, which according to legend can drive away bad luck. Money

The number eight represents prosperity.  It’s believed that a pair of eights can double one’s fortune (since, “good things come in pairs”). MoneyMoney

Healthy Weight WEEK (Jan. 18th-24th, '09)

     This week– January 18-24, 2009 – has been…

    Healthy Weight Week

Thurs. (1/22) was Women’s Healthy Weight DAY

    PL112Weight-Problems-Posters.jpg scale image by donnalyn_2007

Healthy Weight Week is a time to celebrate healthy living habits that last a lifetime and prevent eating and weight problems, rather than intensifying them, as diets do.

Traditionally many Americans begin a diet the first week in January and "blow" it the second week.  Healthy Weight Week, the third week, is a time to stop dieting for good and help people normalize their lives.  It’s a welcome antidote to the dieting and bingeing that typically begin the New Year!  Healthy Weight Week promotes healthy non-diet lifestyles for children and adults of every size.  It helps them move ahead to healthy habits they can live with long term – sound, reasonable habits that allow them to live well and get on with their lives. Eat well, live actively, and feel good about yourself and others.*

So, if that DIET you started as a New Year’s resolution hasn’t been working out – there’s good news:

Francine Berg, of Healthy Weight Network is advising people to skip dieting and move ahead with healthy habits that last a lifetime.  “Here’s a plan for the new year that’s free, freeing of your spirit and available to all,” she suggested.  “It’s a way to get your life on track, improve your health and move on with what’s really important in your life.”

    - Record your dieting history (weight lost, weight regained, favorable and ill effects, time frame of each). Reflect on what you have written.

    - Resolve to follow a healthy diet-free lifestyle through 2009, adapting guidelines that work for you. (Handouts available at www.healthyweight.net/handouts.htm)

So, don’t give up your resolve to be healthier; just re-resolve to put some healthier non-diet lifestyle habits in place.  (For Tips on how to create good habits, go to Care-Aware’s New Year's Day post [Jan 1, 2009]. http://care-aware.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!DBE452D9D129BF48!265.entry)  Here are some suggestions from the Healthy Weight Network website that you might pick from to start with (see site for more):

    • Stop dieting.

    • Be active in your own way every day.

    • Identify and build on your own special talents, traits and interests.

    • Feel good about others.

    • Promote good relationships and communication with family, friends and acquaintances.

    • Rediscover normal eating – eat at regular times, typically three meals and snacks to satisfy hunger.

    • Eat well. Include all five food groups every day.

    • Relax and relieve stress in your life.

    • Respect and appreciate size diversity.

    Women’s Healthy Weight DAY (Jan 22, '09)

    Today – January 22, 2009 – is…

    Women’s Healthy Weight Day

This is also Healthy Weight WEEK

     weight.jpg weight image by GeorgeV2

Women’s Healthy Weight Day is a day to honor size-diversity and women's equality, especially within advertising and the media.  This year (2009) is the 16th annual celebration of this event.

Weight categories were dropped to a lower level in 1998, which automatically increased the number of people who were labeled as “overweight.”  The new category of “Normal Weight”, defined as body mass index between 18.5 and 24.9, was set as the level where health risks associated with weight were supposedly at their lowest level; but that defines health risks as beginning at a BMI of 25, which is actually much lower than is suggested by research.

Read more on the Healthy Weight Controversy [click]

    insecure.jpg weigh 4 image by randominize_it

Women's Healthy Weight Awards are given on this day “to honor organizations which support size-diversity and positive body images, and reject the thinness-obsession and gender-stereotypes which are shattering the lives of so many women, young girls and their families.”

    The 2009 Women's Healthy Weight Award-Winners are:

Best program:  Reflections Body Image Program

Reflections Body Image Program is a research-based program (endorsed by the Academy of Eating Disorders) which combats the ultra thin media model of female beauty prevalent in today’s society. It  consists of peer-led small group sessions which are run on campuses; & it trains student leaders and professionals, and fosters research.  A key Reflections message is:  “Friends don't let friends fat-talk.”

Best Website: The National Organization for Women Foundation’s Love your Body Website.

The Love your Body website gives girls and women tools and encouragement to “just say no” to destructive media images; and it helps raise awareness about women's health, body image and self-esteem - “to be healthy and love yourself regardless of what the scale says.”  The site features suggestions for campus activities on how to treat your body with respect, mentoring, articles, a poster contest, positive and negative ads, and activism options on dealing with advertising, clothing stores and the media.

Recalled Peanut Butter Products are Spreading (January 21, 2009)

Peanut Butter Products & Bulk Commercial Peanut Butter & Peanut Paste Recalls - January 21, 2009:

The recent issue with the salmonella (Salmonella Typhimurium) contamination of commercial (non-retail) King Nut brand peanut butter (a type which was distributed to schools, colleges, hospitals, nursing homes, etc.) has now spread to multiple peanut-butter- &/or peanut-paste- containing retail products, as well.

The FDA has traced the outbreak source to the Blakely, Ga. processing plant which is owned by the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA).  PCA expanded its previous voluntary recall on January 18 – it now includes more products and lot numbers of the peanut butter/paste products which were manufactured either on or after July 1, 2008; & they’ve also stopped all production at its’ Blakely, Ga. plant during the continuing FDA investigation.

Since the paste/butter which they made is both distributed to served by institutions such as long-term care facilities and cafeterias AND also used as an ingredient in many commercially produced products (including cakes, cookies, crackers, candies, cereals, snack/energy/granola bars, ice creams, some fruits/vegetables [i.e. apples, celery, etc. with pb], & at least one brand of pet product), the recall has now become wide-spread (sorry – I can neither resist nor avoid the pun there - p.b.<-->spread [while at the same time remaining sincerely concerned about the potential health risks, here]).

It should be noted that (per the FDA) “major national brands of jarred peanut butter are not affected by the PCA recall.

    What should we avoid eating?

The FDA has created an extensive & searchable combined list of products and brands which are involved in the recall:

View &/or Search the Peanut Butter Products Recall List [click]

Full listings of recalled products are also available in either PDF (requires Adobe) or Excel (requires Microsoft viewer) formats:

Download PDF of Full List of Recalled Products PDF

Get Excel Spreadsheet of Full List of Recalled Products

NOTE:  Two more updates regarding this recall have been posted to Care-Aware since the time this one was originally posted.  Please read those (HERE and HERE) for additonal information.

    National Prayer Service (Jan 21, ’09 @ 10 a.m. EST)

    Today - Wednesday, January 21, 2009 – is a day of…

    National Prayer Service

    PRESIDENTOBAMAPRAYN.jpg OBAMA PRAY'N image by badgirlgonegood29

A National prayer service with President Barack Obama, Vice President Joseph Biden, and members of their families will be held at the Washington National Cathedral.  The service will bring together dignitaries and Americans of diverse faiths to celebrate the previous day's events through prayer, readings, and musical performances; & will include a traditional prayer for civil leaders, a prayer for the nation, & a selection by the Washington, DC-based Children of the Gospel choir.  A number of religious leaders were specially invited to participate.

Various websites were reporting that the following participants were expected to be there:

Rev. Sharon Watkins - who is the pastor & president of a Protestant denomination (Christian Church [Disciples of Christ]) which has about 700,000 members in the United States and Canada - will deliver the sermon at the National Prayer Service; & is the first woman ever chosen to do so.

Dr. Uma Mysorekar - a Hindu woman priest  who is president of the Hindu Temple Society of North America & heads the popular Ganesha temple in New York (& who is also a practicing gynecologist) - will offer 'responsive prayers' at the service.

Ingrid Mattson - the first woman president of the Islamic Society of North America (which is based in Indiana, & is the nation's largest Muslim group) – is said to also be on the list of thos invited to offer a prayer at the service.

Three rabbis, representing the three major branches of American Judaism, will say prayers at the service, as well.    The Jewish clergy are:  Rabbi David Saperstein (Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform), Conservative Rabbi Jerome Epstein and Orthodox Rabbi Haskel Lookstein.

It is also traditional for the incoming administration to ask the Roman Catholic archbishop of Washington to lead a prayer. The Most Rev. Donald Wuerl currently leads the archdiocese.  Other sources say that Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori will offer the closing prayer.

For the finalized listing of participants by the PIC (Presidential Inaugural Committee), however, click HERE.

The event is not open to the public. The service is by invitation only and tickets are required.  (All ticketed guests should arrive before 8:30 a.m. - doors open at 7:30 a.m.)  The service is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. EST.

Today, President-Elect Obama will be inaugurated as the 44th president of the United States of America.  Vice-President-Elect Biden will be sworn in to his new position, as well.  The event has an added historic note, this time, as Barack Obama will be the first American President who is also African-American.

The 2009 Inaugural Theme is “A New Birth of Freedom”, which commemorates the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. The words (from Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg address) express Lincoln's hope that the sacrifice of those who died to preserve the United States would lead to "a new birth of freedom" for the nation.

The Swearing-In Ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. (EST); after which, President Barack Obama, Vice President Joseph Biden, and members of their families will attend an Inaugural Luncheon hosted by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies.

MLK Day celebrates the life & “Dream” of the late Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., the famous civil rights leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner, & Baptist minister.  Dr. King is also famous for his "I Have A Dream" speech (1963), which is often considered to be one of the greatest and most notable speeches in history, & was ranked the top American speech of the 20th century by a 1999 poll.  One of the most-remembered lines from this speech is, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."

    Religious Freedom Day (Jan 16th)

    Friday, January 16th, is…

    Religious Freedom Day

Religious Freedom Day (RFD) was first established by proclamation of President George H. W. Bush in 1993.

From the President George W. Bush’s proclamation on RFD 2009:

“Religious freedom is the foundation of a healthy and hopeful society. On Religious Freedom Day, we recognize the importance of the 1786 passage of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom. We also celebrate the first liberties enshrined in our Constitution's Bill of Rights, which guarantee the free exercise of religion for all Americans and prohibit an establishment of religion.”
