November 25 International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (Nov 25) & 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence (begins 11/25)
November 25th, is:
International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
On November 6th, 2009, UNIFEM launched the global advocacy initiative: “Say NO – UNiTE to End Violence against Women.” The program & website will join people together from around the world to take actions to end the violent acts against women & it will also spotlight those global efforts & demonstrate the groundswell of support for this important issue. UNIFEM & “Say NO – UNiTE” are organizations established under the United Nations’ umbrella.
Actress Nicole Kidman is a Goodwill Ambassador for UNIFEM & also a SayNO – UniTE Spokesperson. Here are two videos for the day, with her in them – the PSA & welcome videos for SayNO – UNiTE:
Say No - UNiTE Welcome Message (Click to view video, if missing here.)
Up to 70 percent of women experience physical or sexual violence from men in their lifetime — with the abusers usually being someone known to them. Perhaps the most pervasive human rights violation that we know today, it harms families & fractures communities, stalling human development, undermining economic growth. Violence against women and girls has far-reaching consequences, & it devastates lives. Everyone has a role to play in combating this global pandemic; the time to act together is NOW.

November 25th also marks the start of the “16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence” – which began in 1980. This campaign pointedly begins on the same day as the International Day To End Violence Against Women & ends on International Human Rights Day; & it originated at the Women’s Global Leadership Institute (WGLI) organized in 1991 by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership (CWGL).
Over 2,800 organizations in 156 countries have participated in the “16 Days…” campaign, and the movement continues to grow. There’s a full International Calendar of Activities; & it’s available on FaceBook, as well.
The 2009 theme for 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence is: “Commit ▪ Act ▪ Demand: We CAN End Violence Against Women!”

September 27th is…
WORLD HEART DAY
World Heart Day is sponsored by the World Heart Federation® (WHF) – who hope to globally educate people about heart disease and stroke.
Heart disease and stroke are the world’s leading cause of death. (That’s 17.2 million lives each year.)
At least 80% of premature deaths from heart disease and stroke could be avoided …if the main risk factors – tobacco, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity – are controlled.
The theme for WHD 2009 is…
“Work With Heart”
This year’s theme recognizes the interdependence of healthy employees and the successful achievement of business objectives. The WHF, along with the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Economic Forum, and other businesses around the world, encourage others to implement workplace wellness programs.

Get Ready Day & Take A Loved One To The Doctor Day (3rd Tues of Sept)
The Third Tuesday of September is…
Get Ready Day
&
Take A Loved One To The Doctor Day
Get Ready Day is sponsored by the American Public Health Association (APHA). Its’ purpose is to help Americans to prepare themselves, their families and their communities for all of the hazards they could potentially face: including pandemic flu and other emerging infectious diseases or hazards or disasters.
Get Ready Day has lots of fact sheets available at their site: these include some for info on the H1N1 virus (AKA swine flu), plus earthquakes, floods, heat waves, power outages, work emergencies, winter storms and other disaster-preparedness; and they’re available in Spanish, as well. They also have a blog, podcast, & quarterly e-newsletter, & are available on Twitter.
The GRD website also has a special section for children: you can download games & puzzles, print out a kids’ preparedness guide & family checklist, & check out their other fun & educational links for kids, there. They also ran a song contest for GRD, in 2007, & you can listen to their winning entries. Just click on the links below for those:
Listen to the winners of the Get Ready Song Contest!
Visit the Get Ready website:
The MONTH of SEPTEMBER is also National Preparedness Month. You can find more information for that by going to Ready America (www.ready.gov).
The Third Tuesday of September is also…
Take A Loved One to the Doctor Day
Take a Loved One to the Doctor Day is part of a national campaign by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health’s “Closing the Health Gap” campaign (& is also part of its’ part of its’ “Initiative to Eliminate Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health”) which focuses on the health gap between minority populations and the general population.
Take a loved one to the Doctor Day is used as a day to encourage individuals to see a health care professional or to make an appointment to see a health care professional and begin taking charge of your health! So if you’ve arrived at this info late in the day (or even some other time of the year), take heart – and make an appointment! – because the point is to rally others you care about to take care of themselves & their health by seeing their doctor(s) regularly, as they should. Any time’s a good time to start doing that!

World Lymphoma Awareness Day (9/15)
September 15th is…
World Lymphoma Awareness Day
World Lymphoma Awareness Day (WLAD) began in 2004, & is a global campaign sponsored by the Lymphoma Coalition – which is a non-profit organization of networked patient groups from around the world.
There are more than 35 types of lymphoma.
About 360, 000 people worldwide are diagnosed with it each year.
WOW!: According to the Lymphoma Coalition, “less than 50 per cent of people know anything about this potentially life-threatening disease” & “almost three quarters (74 per cent) of people do not know that lymphoma is a form of cancer”! (I wouldn’t have thought! … Definitely need an awareness day!!)
If untreated, some lymphomas can be fatal within six months.
Nearly 200,000 people die from lymphoma every year.
“Know Your Nodes.” Two years ago, the Know Your Nodes campaign was launched for WLAD. fun and interactive to help people learn about nodes, & the lymphatic system… and, most importantly, the signs and symptoms of lymphoma.
“Know Your Nodes” Interactives [click] Quick Quiz, Signs & Symptoms List, Fast Fact-Sheet
Lymphoma is the most commonly occurring blood cancer and the third most common childhood cancer.
One million people worldwide live with lymphoma.
The Beacons of Hope program was created in 2006 to celebrate inspiring people around the world who have been affected by lymphoma. The people chosen by the Coalition become ambassadors who spread hope for lymphoma across the world. The the LC is now creating a photo album to reflect the ‘Beacons of Hope’ theme (you can view those photos here).

Today’s a day to honor the lives lost on 9/11/01 – in the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in southwest Pennsylvania.
Read the Presidential Patriot Day & National Day of Service and Remembrance Proclamation (2009)
To honor those who died, fly your flag(s) at half-staff, today, & observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. (Eastern Daylight Time) – which marks the time of the first plane crash on September 11, 2001.
This year (2009) is the first year in which the National Day of Service and Remembrance has been established & observed. NDSR was signed into law this past April as part of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, with the mission to honor the victims of 9/11 and those who rose to service in response to the attacks as well as all those who protect our country by encouraging all Americans and others throughout the world to pledge to voluntarily perform at least one good deed, or another service activity on 9/11 each year.
You can join in. Visit MyGoodDeed – the 911 Day of Service Organization – @ www.911dayofservice.org & pledge to do a good deed (or other act of volunteer work or charitable activity) during this week.

September 10th is…
“Stop a Suicide Today” Day & World Suicide Prevention Day
This is National Suicide Prevention WEEK (Sept. 6-12, 2009) & SEPTEMBER is Suicide Prevention MONTH
The Terry Wise Story: A Suicide Attempt Survivor
Just a couple of days ago, an online-friend of mine let us know that her BF’s very best friend had recently died from suicide. The word “DEVESTATING” cannot even begin to cover the impact of this on him & her & his friend’s wife, & others! Over the years, both online & off, I’ve encountered a number of situations in which people have either been suicidal or forever-changed (& traumatized) by the suicide of a loved one/friend. I can think of at least two other bloggers, just this past year alone who had blogged about having suicidal feelings. Granted, the people who have blogs due to major health issues &/or deaths-in-their-families are under huge stresses. But there are plenty of other situations in life which may contribute to a higher rate of suicides… including the current economic stressors, alcoholism, veterans returning from the front, people in the midst of relationship turmoil, traumas/deaths/losses, and also teenage-hood & aging.
Over 90% of those who die by suicide had a diagnosable mental illness.
It is a myth that people who talk about suicide won’t kill themselves.
Since posting the Care-Aware™ update on Suicide Prevention Days last year, I had run across this Dr. Phil talking suicide-prevention widget (below). You will also find it permanently-posted on the Care-Aware™ home page.
Lifeline Gallery (where the Dr. Phil Widget is from) is “a place to share, & listen to, stories of hope & recovery.” The gallery is for those who need hope (who may be feeling suicidal) as well as for suicide attempt survivors. But it’s also for those who’ve lost a loved one to suicide, & for all who support suicide prevention, as well. To check out the gallery, just click on “Lifeline Gallery” at the beginning of this paragraph.
To share the Dr. Phil widget on your website, just click here (for the Lifeline Gallery page featuring his widget), then click the “EMBED PLAYER” button; copy the “Get embed code”, there; & paste to your page/website.
If you’re feeling suicidal, PLEASE listen to Dr. Phil & follow his instructions (call the Suicide Prevention Lifeline @ 1-800-273-TALK [their webpage is www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org/]). I noticed, on their page, that they now have a Veterans Hotline, also (just press “1”, when you call) as well as a Veteran’s Online Chat (see website for link). Here’s the coordinating Veteran’s PSA, for that (which features actor Gary Sinise from the T.V. show “CSI”):
More info on suicide prevention for vets can be found @:
www.mentalhealth.va.gov/suicide_prevention
As I post this-all, I can’t help but think of how all those who’ve lost a loved one from suicide might be feeling. The focus here is on “prevention”, after all. But I know that the aftermath of losing someone to a suicide can leave those who are left behind with wrenching/tormented feelings of guilt & over-responsibility (however unwarranted, ‘though also understandable) about what they perhaps could’ve done differently to have prevented the death, & such. It’s certainly not my intent to add to that-all, here (& I definitely hope you don’t ‘go there’ with all-this)! If you’ve lost someone to suicide, please know that you have my heart & sincere sympathies, in that.

Please know that someone out here cares – whether you’ve thought about taking your own life, or have had someone in your life die from suicide – I wouldn’t be doing this post, if I didn’t!

June 7th, 2009, is…
National Cancer Survivors Day
National Cancer Survivors Day® is a “Celebration of Life” - a symbolic event to show the world that life after a cancer diagnosis can be a reality.
The National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation defines a "survivor" as anyone living with a history of cancer… from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life.
Survivorship is not without its’ own challenges: there are often physical, emotional, and financial hardships which can continue for years after diagnosis and treatment… sometimes including things like access to cancer specialists and promising new treatments, denial of health and life insurance coverage, financial hardships long after the initial diagnosis and treatment, employment problems, psychological struggles and the strain on personal relationships and the profound fear of recurrence. More resources, research and legislation are needed, to help improve the quality of cancer survivors’ lives.
I personally know scores of survivors – from many who’ve been recently-diagnosed (& who are currently in treatment), to those who were diagnosed some time ago & have completed their treatments & are in remission or “NED” (declared as having “No Evidence of Disease”, in cancer-world terms), or even declared as having been “cured.” I know of children who were given as little as less than 10% chance of living who are still here years later… of a woman who was told she had just months (or weeks) to live, who is still here several years later… & even of people who have survived cancer for decades (just to cite a few of the many instances)! They are proof that one can live fulfilling lives after a cancer diagnosis, despite (& amidst) the challenges of it-all. I celebrate their lives & survivorship with each of them, today.
Happy Cancer Survivors Day to ALL cancer survivor’s everywhere! You are beacons of hope to many others; & your lives & courage & stories are precious & priceless, in this world. Blessings!

May 31 World No Tobacco Day (May 31)
Today – May 31st – is…
World No Tobacco Day
This year’s theme is:
"Tobacco Health Warnings"
Picture warnings have been shown to be particularly effective at making people aware of the health risks of tobacco use and convincing them to quit.
More and more countries have been requiring that packages of tobacco show the dangers of the product's use – which is called for in the guidelines to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
Since the theme revolves around pictures, I’m thinking I should end the write-up, here, & get straight to them:

I'd post more of them as-is, here... but they don't seem to be available in a readily-post-able form... so here are links to more: (Just click to view...)

The three main photos used for this year's WNTD campaign include the photo above of a diseased mouth, plus one of a small child undergoing a breathing/asthma treatment while smoke from the pack of cigarettes swirls around the pack/child, & also one of a brain which is oozing a river of blood from a stroke. Today – May 19th – is…
Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Day
Phelan-McDermid Syndrome is a genetic disorder which is associated with specific developmental and physical features resulting from the loss of a small amount of genetic material from Chromosome 22. The name for it is said as: "22-q-one-three." (See the link above [Foundation - in purple] for more information.)
New to you? Me, TOO (I learn a LOT, doing this)! I had never heard of this syndrome before this month.
& today is also…
World Hepatitis Day
One in 12 people worldwide are living with either chronic hepatitis B or hepatitis C; but awareness of this remains low – so many people who are infected are unaware of it.
Are YOU number 12? ‘Am I Number 12?’ is the World Hepatitis Day slogan, because they want each of us to stop & think about how common hepatitis is, globally, & whether we may be at risk (and if so, to get tested)… and also to know about how to avoid becoming infected. Visit the link above or www.aminumber12.org for more information.

In fact, just in the past few years, even the NIH has begun to get involved in such studies through its’ Frontier Medicine Initiative. May 01 May Day (May 1st) & Healthful Flower Power
Today – May 1st – is…
May Day
May Day is often celebrated with the distribution of baskets of flowers – sometimes left on a person’s doorstep anonymously as an act of kindness. In certain times & countries, there was also often dancing involved – around a “May Pole” festooned with long ribbons (which became intertwined within the dance). “April showers bring May flowers” after all.
Flowers are helpful & healthful way beyond May, though: scientific studies have shown that they’re good for multiple facets of health & wellness. If you’re allergic to flowers, don’t worry – many/most of these benefits can also be attained by simply looking at photos of flowers & such… or at a garden out the window.
The simple presence of a potted plant can aid patients in surgical recovery, for example. A study done at Kansas State University showed that patients who had plants in their rooms after surgery had significantly less need for post-operative painkilling medications, lower systolic blood pressure & heart rates, lower ratings of their pain, anxiety, and fatigue, and more-positive feelings and higher satisfaction about their rooms, even (when compared with patients in the control group). That said, keep in mind that many hospitals do not allow plants & flowers to be brought in to patients, any longer, due to those who are allergic to pollens & molds &/or have asthma & other breathing problems which are worsened by them.
Another scientific study showed that flowers make people happy immediately upon receiving them; & that happiness lasts for a long time, & get’s ‘paid forward’, as those happy people then tend to make more connections with other people.
Senior citizens who receive flowers experience less depression than those who don't, according to - researchers from Rutgers University & elsewhere - & also score higher on memory tests. They make the effort to seek out conversations with other people, after receiving flowers, as well.
Umm... might want to leave some room to work, there!
When flowers and plants are present in the workplace, they’ve found that people are better-able to perform their jobs – being more productive and coming up with more-creative solutions to problems at hand... which in turn reduces workplace stress. Many other studies have confirmed multiple health & wellness benefits related to flowers.
So, if there’s a health-related “May Day” afoot, try some flowers – in addition to your friendship (but, find out if your recipient may be allergic to the real ones, first – then go for photos/cards/posters & such)! Pass out some flowers this May… & all the other months, too.
Of course, looking at cute pets can help, too… but that’s another post.

April 10 Siblings Day (April 10)
April 10th is…
Siblings Day
Siblings Day is an opportunity to acknowledge the importance of the sibling-relationship & express appreciation & recognition to our brothers and sisters for everything they’ve brought to our lives, & perhaps to heal old wounds & conflicts with them. It’s also a day to remember with love and gratitude those siblings who no longer are with us.
Like Mother's and Father's Days, Siblings Day follows the same spirit and tradition – just for brothers & sisters, instead. It can be celebrated by doing similar things… such as sending a card or letter, making a phone call, getting together & spending time together, going out to eat, playing games &/or sharing remembrances & hugs & the like. You could also send a postcard:
Send a free Siblings Day ePostcard [click]
Claudia A. Evart, who is a freelance paralegal in Manhattan, NY, founded Siblings Day after coming up with the idea on her 40th birthday, in 1996. Claudia’s own two siblings both died at early ages of tragic accidents: her sister, Lisette, was 19 when she died in an auto accident when she was travelling abroad (in 1972), & her brother, Alan, died from a slip-&-fall accident in his home when he was 36 (in 1987).
April 10th was chosen as the date for Siblings day because it’s the birthdate of Claudia’s late sister, Lisette.
Thirty-one states have officially established Siblings Day. Once it’s been universally established, Claudia plans to present annual “Brothers & Sisters Awards” for caregivers of disabled siblings, & also utilize her Siblings Day Foundation to become a national resource call-in center for sibling-bereavement & other sibling issues, & to support family organizations which provide similar sibling services.

Today – Wednesday, April 8th , 2009 – is…
SAAM Day of Action APRIL is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM)
The SAAM Day of Action (formerly A Day to End Sexual Violence), is a day to focus awareness on sexual violence prevention.
This year’s SAAM theme is…
Prevent Sexual Violence...in our workplaces.
The SAAM slogan is…
Respect Works!
Behaviors which involve physical contact are usually called abuse, rape, or sexual assault. All forms of sexual violence can and do happen in the workplace. The abuser or offender can be of the same or opposite sex, a supervisor, an agent of the employer, a supervisor in another area, a co-worker, or a non-employee.
Sexual harassment & violence in the workplace are not about sex but about power & control. Learn more about the underlying dynamics:
View the Workplace Power & Control Wheel
Victims of sexual assault at work may have difficulties meeting ongoing work demands in the aftermath of an assault – including decreased work functioning, sometimes for up to 8 months after the attack – and nearly 50% of rape victims lose their jobs or are forced to quit in the aftermath of the crime.
Prevention of workplace violence includes setting standards of respect for others in the workplace & for responding to & reporting acts of sexual harassment and violence. Businesses can also support their local rape crisis centers through donations of time and/or money; &, by showing they care, others in the community will be inspired to learn more about how to help.
