We are now in the middle of the National Days of Prayer and Remembrance – held this year from Fri. Sept. 5th (yesterday) thru Sun. the 7th (tomorrow).
These days are set aside to pay tribute & honor to all those who were affected by the terrorist activities on Sept. 11, 2001; to hold the victims & their families in our prayers, & to pray for the continued safety of our country & all of its’ citizens & servicepersons.

September 05 "Go for the GOLD!" Series - Event #3: "Opening Ceremonies"
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month Sept. 13th is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Day
“Go for the GOLD!” Champion the CURE for Childhood Cancers! Series Event #3 – Opening Ceremonies
COLORS
This past week I opened up a magazine, & my eyes fell on these opening words:
“YELLOW IS THE COLOR OF SEPTEMBER. WHY yellow? School busses. This is when they emerge from their summer hibernation to perform the most basic requirement of education – getting kids to school.” - Edward Grinnan, Editor-inChief (in his Editor’s Note*, “My Old School (Bus)” – Guideposts magazine, September 2008)
It took me quite a while to be able to read the rest of his note, there (however-good… which it was). That first bit slammed me like a bus, itself. All I could think of was that -- to me, now, and so many (too many) others -- September’s color isn’t yellow but GOLD: the color of Childhood Cancer Awareness (although, admittedly, until recently, I’d mistaken the gold for yellow… but nonetheless).
Yellow, though, is also the color which makes me think of Julian (AKA “King JuJu” to his family & many of us extended-/cyber-family), & his favorite song (“You Are My Sunshine” [“…please don’t take my sunshine away” *sigh*]), & the yellow rose of the state where he lived (Texas, USA). I think I’d read somewhere once, too, that yellow is also the color of flower which is sometimes given to mothers who’ve lost a child (likely because one of its’ meanings is “daily remembrance”?) – JuJu’s mommy, Mimi, is one of those mom’s. Julian would’ve turned 5, this year (oh how he was looking forward to that – it was his top wish: to celebrate his 5th birthday), & might’ve ridden one of those big yellow school busses (had he been well-enough), this fall. Instead, he is walking the streets of gold in Heaven.
I can’t help but think of all of the other children who aren’t able to attend school (via yellow bus or otherwise), this fall – either because they’ve died or because they’re hospitalized for treatments or are having treatment side-/after-effects or isolation needs (again, at any one time, 35-40,000 children are in treatment – enough to fill a stadium, themselves), or cancer symptoms… or because they don’t have the stamina &/or there’s no way their immune systems can handle any of the germs which normally occur in a school environment. … I can’t help but think of all the children & families who’ve been affected by childhood cancers.
The recent Olympics contained plenty of the color gold, too – it’s the color of champions; & the children who have these cancers are, at once, both champions & regular (yet awesome & inspiring) kids.
MEDALS
Childhood Cancer Awareness Month opens in the midst of many ongoing races & events. Often, the Olympics do, as well; but childhood cancer has not been going on for only a few days or years (or, for that matter, for only a few decades). And, unlike the Summer Olympics of 2008, there have been medal ceremonies of one sort or another held long before any opening or closing ceremonies… ones without flags or the playing of national anthems or the eyes of millions on them, perhaps; but ones for champions nonetheless; & ones which (to me, anyway) top most of those athletic ones. Take this story, for example – here’s one Olympian who was a gold-champion kind of guy before he even hit the field (in Beijing, at the Summer Olympics)… to another young medal-worthy champion he befriended - A.J. (in the photo above): http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/soccer/news?slug=ro-holden081208&prov=yhoo&type=lgns
MEDIA Unlike the worldwide, nearly-around-the-clock coverage of the Olympics, the media coverage for childhood cancer & its’ many issues has been frustratingly sparse. Think about it – when’s the last time you’ve seen even an hour-long show exclusively addressing pediatric cancers & its’ specific issues? I personally can’t recall one… I mean, I see brief bits, here & there; but I would’ve had no clue, from them, about the true realities & extensive issues & facts, had I not been online following scores of real stories over the past several years. I DO recall seeing numerous stories about children who have been either abducted or murdered. Yet, each year, thousands of children are being 'abducted' & 'murdered' by cancers (at an average age of 6 years old, by the way). Let’s consider ourselves all to be under an “Amber Alert”, for them!! Let’s be the allied force which brings their killer to justice (i.e. a CURE)! Reminder: Friday, Sept. 5th, 2008, ABC, CBS, & NBC will be simultaneously airing the fundraising special, “Stand Up to Cancer”(www.standup2cancer.org). While this, also, will be aimed towards all cancers, rather than specifically/only about childhood cancers (which we’d all like to see a show about, in major-media, as well); there will be some children featured, in it - such as Julian, whom I mentioned above… & also an inspiring young lady named Pearce. Introduce yourselves to 11 year-old Pearce (news video): http://cbs3.com/video/?id=64042@kyw.dayport.com And, until then (&/or after), here’s a little more “face” time (literally), with “our” guy, Julian:
Ohhh, that FACE! :) I just long to reach through the screen & hug him; and I know that, as much as I may want to, his own mother’s arms (as well as the parents of so many others) ache exponentionally/unimaginably more… or, like A.J.’s dad, Bob’s, ache to ache again from their’ physically-being-here – in Bob’s case, from throwing football’s to “Age”:
The Show The shows at the opening ceremonies at the Olympics are extravagant & breathtaking. Children who have cancers are sometimes able to enjoy fun events, too -- in between treatments… when/if they’re feeling well enough & the necessary immunity precautions &/or food restrictions & finances allow for it. Most-times they enjoy things in their own homes, at the playrooms in the hospitals, or just watching t.v. or videos from their beds. They may occasionally enjoy excursions out (tickets & such are often provided through charitable organizations). They may even get to fulfill a wish through an organization… often, though, this occurs during one of the last opportunities to do so, before they’re gone. Here’s one show that’s far more precious & breathtaking (within its' simplicity) than the ones at the 2008 Summer Olympics (impressive as they may have been to many). It stars “our” dancing King, Julian… along with his brothers & mama:
PARADE of CHAMPIONS At the Olympic opening, the athletes enter the stadium, & parade around the track, carrying the flags of their countries. But, again – these champs of childhood cancers didn’t choose their events (despite the fact that they often go on playing & smiling despite how awful they feel); & their “events” are NOT games. Instead of flags, they carry with them the names of the cancers which they’ve been diagnosed with (often being able to rattle them [&/or their nicknames & treatment/medication names] off as easily as character names from their favorite cartoons). Their fans & spectators are most-often kept at a distance, out of necessity & the situational-realities. Here are just a few of them: Many of childhood cancer's "champions" are dead. (I realize that’s blunt – but it’s also true.) In fact, two of the five children in the photos above are, also. We’re losing them at the rate of around THREE THOUSAND every year. That’s the largest killer by disease of America’s children: more than from asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, congenital anomalies, and pediatric AIDS, combined. Here’s one "parade" that I wish that no child was in… & no parent had any reason to lend their pictures to. It’s a montage of just the smallest fraction of the legions of children who didn’t live. It was made by Julian’s mom, Mimi. I’ll caution you that it may be difficult for those who are sensitive to watch, & that it’s not intended for children… while I shake my head at how ironic that statement is – because it is children, themselves, who have lived it… the children in it, themselves, who have died… & it is those of us who are sensitive enough to care deeply about them who should not turn away, but see & respond:
Costs At the recent Summer Olympics 2008, it was reported that 300 million dollars was spent just on the cauldron lighting at the opening alone. In comparison, a bill recently passed through congress which finally approved 30 million dollars a year for research funding for childhood cancers. I also read that China spent around 60 billion dollars on readying for the Olympics, & all I can think is how much cancer research that could buy towards a cure (not that those funds would’ve ever gone there, instead, but still). Currently, only 3% of the budget from the National Cancer Institute goes towards childhood cancer research. When the parents of children who have cancers hear about how much money is going towards other things, like the war (that same 30 million is spent on just 2 hours of the current war overseas, for example), it understandably hurts… especially since there are currently things which researchers say they know of which they could develop, but lack the funds. While they wait for more funding & better treatments, children die. Just yesterday, I read in an online awareness post that the statistics that are often quoted for cancer cure rates – 75%, & the like – actually only refer to the first five years after diagnosis… after which the survival-percentages once again start falling.
Themes & Mottos
Perhaps, though, yellow also does fit in, here (in addition to GOLD). The yellow ribbon also represents sarcoma/bone cancer, bladder & liver cancers, as well as the “Amber Alert”, support our troops (& these children are definitely “warriors”), POW/MIA (they are also held prisoner by their “wars” with cancer… & missing in action, often, from their schools & playgrounds & other normal activities)… & it stands for “hope in general”. Mimi (in remembrance of Julian) says she answers her phone with “yell-ow” (instead of “hello”). You know how some people also say, “yell-loooooooooow!!!” in a way that says, “hey, WAKE UP, already!!”? Well, that’s what it makes me think of… & especially with Childhood Cancer Awareness issues. It’s time to not only Stand Up, but wake up (fully)… & “Go for the GOLD!” It’s time to find the CURE; & WE-all can help to champion it!! The 2008 Summer Olympics’ theme was: “One World, One Dream.” I’m dreaming of a world where childhood cancers have been obliterated just as surely as one of those world- &/or Olympic- records which people may have previously thought impossible to surpass. How ‘bout you ? Join me in making that dream a reality. Let’s “Go for the GOLD!”, & champion the CURE!! How? The first step in solving a problem is awareness: Knowing about/acknowledging the problem/issue(s). That’s the ticket -- & speaking of that-all, look for some some upcoming printable/editable items which can be spread around far & wide to help with the ticket-to-awareness, soon -- in the future “events” of this “Go for the Gold!” championship series. And, if you haven’t already seen &/or participated in the first two events in this series, you can find them here: Event #1 (& Intro. to the series): care-aware.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!DBE452D9D129BF48!152.entry Event #2: care-aware.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!DBE452D9D129BF48!162.entry (Alternatively, you can go to care-aware.spaces.live.com to see all awareness/event entries; or chose from a topic/category on the right [i.e. “Childhood (Pediatric) Cancer”]. You can also choose to get automatic RSS feeds from either a topic or the Care-Aware webpage; & you can choose to sign up for (email/other) alerts, as well.)
The Torch Let’s keep the flame burning… on behalf all of the children with pediatric cancers (& championship spirits & attitudes!), &their families… until the cure is found! And, don’t forget: Every “Go for the GOLD series event is a RELAY event – so keep one torch burning, yourself, & pass another one on! :)
PS Yep - this was pretty long... yet a LOT shorter than the opening ceremonies at the recent Summer Olympics (& I dare say much more worth our time, aye?!). `````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` * Note: Mr. Grinnan’s Editor’s note can also be found online, here: www.guidepostsmag.com/personal-change/personal-change-archive/?i=3429

Event #2 – Filling the Stands: "Stand up2 Cancer" - Beyond a Spectator Event
Warm bodies are needed to fill some “seats” (numbers) in the Stand (as in “Stand Up 2 Cancer”, that is)!
So… if you haven’t already heard (where ya BEEN ?! lol):
On Sept. 5, 2008, at 8pm (ET/PT, 7pm CT), in an unprecedented event…
ALL THREE MAJOR US TV NETWORKS (ABC, CBS & NBC) will SIMULTANEOUSLY air a Nationally Televised Show: “Stand Up to Cancer” (SUC2).
Here’s a video promo piece about “Stand Up 2 Cancer”:
Some parents have started a “team” on the website for Childhood Cancers. YOU NEEDN’T BE A PARENT OR HAVE A CHILD WITH CANCER TO BE A TEAM MEMBER. Your help is needed to simply enlarge the number of members in that team. Nothing is required other than signing up for the team. The screen will show a fundraising goal, but the team-“captain” (AJs Dad) recommends that, if you or anyone else should want to donate, you do so thru CureSearch (www.curesearch.org), instead. Again, though, this isn’t about that -- you needn’t donate or fundraise, or anything… simply bulk up the team-size, please: fill the “Olympic stadium”, as it were, in support of the champions. :)
Here’s where you go to join the “Parents Standing Up 2 Childhood Cancer” Team:
www.standup2cancer.org/register
Once you are registered, go to the "Get Involved" Tab and click on "The Teams". Just put "Parents standing" in the search box. The “Parents Standing Up 2 Childhood Cancer” team should be the first team that shows up. From there, simply “join” that team.
What Do You Stand For?
Thanks for Championing the CURE & “Standing” for Childhood Cancers by filling the “stands”, everyone!!
Fast Facts on Childhood Cancers:
Many of the advances in adult cancer treatments are due to breakthroughs in childhood cancer research. This may be due, in large part, to the fact that approximately 70% of children with cancers participate in a study, while only about 3% of adults do. Cancers diagnosed in children react differently than most adult cancers – children are still growing, & are NOT just little adults. Yet they are still having-to-be treated with things which were created for grown-ups (& which are many times cytotoxic ['toxic to cells'] -- & not ONLY to the cancer-cells).
Remember, EVERY event is also a RELAY event: Please pass the baton – as in fwd/info./link! I won’t tell you that, if you do, something wonderful will happen to you at 8:32am or whatever. BUT you ARE an essential part of the relay-ripple effect. What if the “baton” you’re holding could’ve reached someone who knows someone-who-knows-someone who could’ve really made a mega-difference in this all (tho, technically, we ALL can/do/are)?? YOU are the MVP catalystic champion-proportions, in all of this – simply by choosing to not DROP the “baton”… but pass it ON!!

August 26 Study Shows Medication Interactions with Multiple Fruit JuicesMEDICATION ALERTS
Drug & Fruit Juice Interactions – Beyond Grapefruit Juice
Have you heard the news about the recent study done on taking medications with juices?
You may already know that there are about 50 medications which shouldn’t be taken with grapefruit juice – doing that can make them more potent & cause toxicity. What I personally wasn’t aware of, about that, is that grapefruit can have this affect for THREE DAYS after drinking/eating it!! Wow. So, keep that in mind if you’re taking one of those medications within 3 days of grapefruit! Also, in addition to grapefruit products, the same effect can happen from tangelos and Seville oranges (that’s another one I just learned, now).
It’s not just blood pressure & cholesterol meds, either – the lists include antidepressants, pain medications, anti-seizure, anti-migraine, & anti-rejections drugs as well as ED medications (i.e. Viagra, etc.) & various other drug categories.
Check these links for lists of specific medications affected by grapefruit/tangelo/Seville orange interactions:
www.mayoclinic.com/health/food-and-nutrition/AN00413 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_drugs_affected_by_grapefruit
(I’d recommend checking all lists, AND consulting your Dr. or pharmacist, as each list does not seem to contain ALL medications which are listed throughout.)
New Research Points to Problems with Other Fruit Juices, As Well
Now, however, they’re also advising that you shouldn’t take ANY medications with ANY other fruit juices (apple, orange, whatever, etc.)… for a bit of a different reason: the study found that taking meds with juice can cut their effectiveness by 50%! (Yikes!) Categories of drugs which are affected include certain anticancer agents, beta blockers, anti-rejection drugs and antibiotics, with additional ones likely to be added. Their recommendation is to swallow most meds with just water, instead.
Here’s a link to a news video regarding the study:

RELAY PORTION OF THE EVENTS:
Every event is a “relay-event”, as well – the more people we pass awareness information on to… well, the more awareness there IS ! So, even if you do nothing else (‘though we hope you DO participate in whatever events possible!), please PASS IT ON (see #5, above, for the address/URL/link which you can post/pass, for this)!

Olympic & Other Champions
The Summer Olympics 2008 have just ended. Medals have been won. The athletes were in training for years. These are admirable people – full of strength & stamina & courage. Watching them can be inspiring. They push beyond limits which previously seemed impossible. They are champions to many.
I did’t need to watch the games to find champions. I’ve been blessed to know many of them, over the years. Lately, I’ve witnessed & read the stories of many of them online: Inspiring people who happen to be dealing with various health issues. They are children & adults who have been challenged by things like various heart problems, cancers, & an assortment of other chronic &/or life-threatening illnesses or disabilities. They are admirable. They are full of strengths which defy their physical limitations; they have internal stamina which I believe not only rivals but goes beyond that of most of even-the-best athletes; they have the courage to move forward through unimaginable trials fraught with fearful things ( all-too-often very real & present dangers) including death, itself. Their bodies are pushed beyond limits which seem impossible (&, sadly, sometimes are). They (& their families & caregivers) are champions to many.
They are champions who are largely-unseen & all-too unknown.
At the very same time in which our Summer Olympics of 2008 were being broadcast around the world, children all over the world were & are racing against the clock as well… but most are doing it with very little awareness of or media attention for their struggles or their heroism. They did not choose their “events”. They didn’t sign up for it-all. If they “win”, there are no Olympic medals. If they lose… it could mean the loss of their very lives. It’s clearly not a “game" ...or even a sport, even though their young bodies are pushed beyond that of any athlete’s (& most still somehow find it within them to play & even to smile & laugh throughout it all).
Today, I’m writing about children with pediatric cancers, specifically; ‘though this also applies to many other children & adults with other health issues. I’m focusing on them because the awareness/ribbon color for childhood cancers is gold; & we’re also heading towards the month of September, which is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
You may have heard statistics on childhood cancers.
Perhaps, like myself (before the past few years), you heard things about how much higher the overall cure-rate is, now (&/or as compared to long-ago)… or of improved treatments for certain (more common) types of childhood cancers. These things are essentially true. But so are the following facts:
I’ve personally witnessed (albeit largely via cyberspace) the journeys of numerous (probably hundreds of) families whose children were diagnosed with pediatric cancers. I’ve learned that there are still plenty more childhood cancers out there with a very low cure rate, & little (if any) funding, overall; & that even those children who are “successfully” treated (&/or who fall into a high-cure-rate group) still go through treatments which, quite frankly, in any other setting than that of the hospitals & doctors & the loving parents who are trying to save their lives would likely be considered as child abuse… &/or also often include precautions mirroring those used for hazardous waste (such as for the handling of certain IV chemotherapies used in treatment or how pregnant mothers are not-being-allowed to bathe their children or have skin-to-skin contact, at times, due to the toxic leaching of particular chemo(s) through their skin/sweat, etc.).
Children are dying. I’ve “watched” (from afar) it happen to more children than I can bear to count (each one is “too-many”). You may think that statistical odds like 70, 75, or 80% (for the 'more-common' cancers) sound pretty encouraging... until a child you know somehow falls into the other 20, 25, or 30% who don't make it... and that's only for those cancers with the 'better odds'. And the odds for the so-called 'rarer' cancers ("rare"? - whole 'nuther issue, there!) can flip those odds on their head, & then some. During these recent olympic games, many parents were thinking of their child who will no longer be able to play one of those sports or attend any more events even as a spectator, or even watch them, again, with them... on their couches at home, on T.V. because they had died.
During their lengthy treatments, the children are often rendered unable to eat (throwing up/diarrhea, stomach/abdominal pains, mouth/throat/intestinal sores), “poked” scores of times (or having to have tubes &/or "ports" surgically put in) & are literally crying out to God (“pweease, Dawd” - in some of the littlest-ones’ language) &/or their mommies & daddies who sit helplessly by, watching the cancer &/or treatments which are meant to save them wreak havoc on the small bodies of their dearest children -- the least of which is hair loss (& bone marrow transplants cause skin to “molt” & finger- & toe-nails to drop off, by the way).
You may be thinking, by now, that I'm overdramatizing it all. I wish I were!!
It's dramatic enough all on its' own. Imagine (& we hope that you DO have to 'imagine', yet) if it happened to your child, grandchild, godchild, niece or nephew or whomever – a child YOU know. Unfortunately, even if it hasn’t been, yet -- it could very-well BE. Approximately 1 in 300 children will be diagnosed with a childhood cancer before reaching adulthood.
When a child is murdered, forces are activated immediately to seek out, capture & contain that child’s killer. When a child goes missing, millions of people are informed immediately through multiple media sources, & every resource possible is made available so that everyone can help rescue that child & bring him/her home safely. When a child gets cancer?… well, when’s the last time we heard about THAT on T.V.?? How many people beyond that child’s family, doctors, & immediate community are even aware of the extent of what s/he’s (& their family’s) going through, with their treatment process? And how much funding is dedicated to the search for a cure for childhood cancers? – ONLY 3 PERCENT of all cancer research monies!! How often (if ever?) have we seen their stories, the facts, the realities of all that is going on with them in the news, or on other television shows (primetime shows, CNN, etc.), or addressed in newspaper & magazine articles? Personally... I can only recall a few minutes, here & there... & it wouldn't have given me much of a clue as to what's really going on (probably mostly some images of some cute bald-headed kids & stories of them being visited, or receiving gifts of some sort... perhaps a couple of minutes-worth of the softened basics about their treatment process?).
YOU (& I) can help CHAMPION THE CURE FOR CHILDHOOD CANCERS!
Are you thinking that just one very-small thing that YOU could do really wouldn’t make much difference? Think about how incredibly small the differences were, in the Olympics, between medalists (or winning a medal & not ): thousandths of a second, sometimes – even ties! … Each small drop of water, when combined, can fill a bucket… or even an Olympic swimming pool.
“Inches make a champion.” - Vince Lombardi (American Football Coach, national symbol of single-minded determination to win. [1913-1970])
It starts NOW.
We're NOT in training.
The 'race' is already being run by too many young 'champions'.
The 'Gold Medal' -- THE CURE! -- needs to be won!!!
I wish I could say that it was all being taken care of by someone else, somewhere, but it's not.
WE'RE IT!!
We CAN do it!!!
WE can CHAMPION THE CURE for CHILDHOOD CANCERS!
Put yourself in the events.
"Go for the GOLD"!!!
One step, one stroke, one action, one word at a time.
Begin with the "EVENT" actions listed above.
...and, "Thank You", in advance!

August 22 Breast Cancer Awareness - 'Non-Lump' Form IBC
There’s a lot of awareness information out there for breast cancer (thank goodness)…
…but, how much do YOU know about the ‘non-lump’ -- & most-aggressive -- form of breast cancer called “IBC” (which stands for Inflammatory Breast Cancer)?
While I had known about it already, I learned some additional things today.
You (&/or others?) may learn more, also, by watching this important & informative news piece*:
