World No Tobacco Day (May 31)

    Today – May 31st – is…

    World No Tobacco Day

    This year’s theme is:

    "Tobacco Health Warnings"

Picture warnings have been shown to be particularly effective at making people aware of the health risks of tobacco use and convincing them to quit.

More and more countries have been requiring that packages of tobacco show the dangers of the product's use which is called for in the guidelines to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

Since the theme revolves around pictures, I’m thinking I should end the write-up, here, & get straight to them:

I'd post more of them as-is, here... but they don't seem to be available in a readily-post-able form... so here are links to more:

The three main photos used for this year's WNTD campaign include the photo above of a diseased mouth, plus one of a small child undergoing a breathing/asthma treatment while smoke from the pack of cigarettes swirls around the pack/child, & also one of a brain which is oozing a river of blood from a stroke.  You can view those in the links below:

American Stroke Month &National Stroke Awareness Month (MAY) – CBS Cares PSA's

    The MONTH of MAY is…

    American Stroke Month &

    National Stroke Awareness Month

“CBS Cares” has been doing short PSA’s (Public Service Announcements) on a variety of health topics.  I saw several different short PSA’s on TV, recently, about stroke awareness.  This was one of them:

Maybe I was just looking in the wrong places, but I must say that when I visited the website which was mentioned in the ads, I had a tough time “learning more” there (at least in regards to strokes – there was some info. on some of the other topics).  Hmm… awareness kind of loses its’ impact if it’s not readily-available, user friendly, & such – don’t you think?

I still like the fact that they’re running the PSA’s, though – that’s an important awareness effort.

Now, if YOU’D like more information about stroke warning signs & prevention, just click on the links below (no hunting involved… unless the links fail or somethin’ Wink):

“The Warning Signs Of A Stroke” [click]

    (One short page – 6 quick bullet-points.)

    “Stroke Prevention Guidelines” [click]

(Nine different points, with info., are given in this one-page guideline.)

Related Events:  The MONTH of MAY is also National High Blood Pressure Education Month.

Older American's Mental Health Week (Last Week of May)

    This week – May 24th – 30th, 2009 – is…

    Older American's Mental Health Week

Olderpeople1.jpg Older people 1 image by marketevolution

Older American's Mental Health Week hopes to spread the message that:

“Mental Illness is NOT a normal part of aging.”

Awareness & understanding help by reducing the stigma about mental illness which keeps many older Americans from seeking help.  For instance, with older people who are often taking multiple medications, one or more of those may cause depression; & knowing this may help people bring the matter up with their doctors & have their medications reevaluated, rather than going through months or even years of unnecessary suffering.  Also, statistics show that 80% of older adults recover from depression after receiving treatment that includes both psychotherapy and anti-depressant medication.

Mental illnesses are real, common and treatable; yet, although one in four American adults have a diagnosable mental illness, less than one-quarter of them get any type of proper attention or appropriate treatment for it.  Undiagnosed and untreated mental illness, however, has serious implications for older adults and their loved ones; & older adults have the highest suicide rate in the country.

    Do you know the difference…

…between healthy grieving over losses and unhealthy depression?

…between normal worries and anxiety disorders?

….between normal use and overuse of alcohol and medications to dull emotional and/or physical pain?

Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Day & World Hepatitis Day (May 19th)

    Today May 19th is…

    Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Day

    22q13 Deletion Foundation

Phelan-McDermid Syndrome is a genetic disorder which is associated with specific developmental and physical features resulting from the loss of a small amount of genetic material from Chromosome 22. The name for it is said as: "22-q-one-three."  (See the link above [Foundation - in purple] for more information.)

New to you?  Me, TOO (I learn a LOT, doing this)!  I had never heard of this syndrome before this month.

    & today is also…

    World Hepatitis Day

    World Hepatitis Alliance

One in 12 people worldwide are living with either chronic hepatitis B or hepatitis C; but awareness of this remains low – so many people who are infected are unaware of it.

Are YOU number 12?  ‘Am I Number 12?’ is the World Hepatitis Day slogan, because they want each of us to stop & think about how common hepatitis is, globally, & whether we may be at risk (and if so, to get tested)… and also to know about how to avoid becoming infected.  Visit the link above or www.aminumber12.org for more information.

“Farrah’s Story” - Video of Cancer Documentary Now Available Online

    “Farrah’s Story”

If you missed the two-hour documentary about Farrah Fawcett’s experiences with being diagnosed with & treated by cancer (which aired last night [May 15, 2009] on NBC), it is now available for viewing online.

Farrah was originally diagnosed (on Sept. 22, ’06) with anal cancer, which eventually became stage 4 - metastasizing to her liver.  She & Ryan O’Neal (her long-time ‘significant other’) had also gone through Ryan’s earlier diagnosis & treatment for CML (Chronic Myelogenous leukemia [diagnosed in 2001]); & the death of Farrah’s sister,Diane, to lung cancer (in 1998).

Much of “Farrah’s Story” includes real-life footage of Farrah (taped by her good friend, Alana Stewart) visiting doctors & going through treatments, surgery, & recovery.  Alana, at one point, had suggested that they needn’t tape all of it; but Farrah told her that this was "what cancer is" (kudos, Farrah)... so, fair warning: there’s footage of her throwing up, in there (sick from anesthesia… she counted herself vomiting 76 times, total, once), & going through the pain & hair loss & good news & bad… all  of the real stuff that cancer brings.  The affect on the family is also shown – with deeply-felt comments & footage from Ryan O’Neal & Farrah’s son, Redmond (who’s currently in jail on drug charges, but was released for a three-hour visit [a few weeks ago]).

Here’s a brief promo piece about Farrah’s documentary:

Farrah comments that there needs to be more awareness, research/funding, & utilization of treatments which are already being used in other countries (& which have been proven as effective, there).  Care-Aware agrees!

A big “thank you” to Farrah & her family & friends (& doctors/staffs) for bringing more, real cancer awareness into the world-wide spotlight.  Our love & prayers go out to her & all of her loved ones.

    Thursday - MAY 7th, 2009 – is…

    National Day of Prayer

This year’s event is the 58th Annual National Day of Prayer.

    This year’s theme is:

    “Prayer, America’s Hope”

The verse chosen this year is from the Psalms:

"May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in you." – Psalm 33:22

NDP features the song "Somebody's Praying"  sung by Ricky Skaggs:

Words and Music by John G. Elliott, Arranged by Mark Hayes.

For more on NDP, visit the official National Day of Prayer website, here.

How does prayer relate to health & wellness (if at all)?  Many studies have actually been done on the affects of prayer, meditation & spirituality on health.  In fact, just in the past few years, even the NIH has begun to get involved in such studies through its’ Frontier Medicine Initiative.  If you missed the link on this info. from the previous Care-Aware™ prayer day post (for World Day of Prayer) just click on the link below:

REMINDER:  The related event, National Day of Prayer Sunday, will be held this coming Sunday, May 10, 2009.

May Day (May 1st) & Healthful Flower Power

    Today – May 1st – is…

    May Day

MayDayBasket4u.gif MAY DAY BASKET image by Celtic106

mayflowers.gif May Flowers image by ctosims

May Day is often celebrated with the distribution of baskets of flowers – sometimes left on a person’s doorstep anonymously as an act of kindness.  In certain times & countries, there was also often dancing involved – around a “May Pole” festooned with long ribbons (which became intertwined within the dance).  “April showers bring May flowers” after all.

may07_f.jpg May flowers image by sharimk5

Flowers are helpful & healthful way beyond May, though:  scientific studies have shown that they’re good for multiple facets of health & wellness.  If you’re allergic to flowers, don’t worry – many/most of these benefits can also be attained by simply looking at photos of flowers & such… or at a garden out the window.

cartoondaisy.gif Happy Pot image by Lee1959

The simple presence of a potted plant can aid patients in surgical recovery, for example.  A study done at Kansas State University showed that patients who had plants in their rooms after surgery had significantly less need for post-operative painkilling medications, lower systolic blood pressure & heart rates, lower ratings of their pain, anxiety, and fatigue, and more-positive feelings and higher satisfaction about their rooms, even (when compared with patients in the control group).  That said, keep in mind that many hospitals do not allow plants & flowers to be brought in to patients, any longer, due to those who are allergic to pollens & molds &/or have asthma & other breathing problems which are worsened by them.

FTDStunningBeautyBuquet.jpg FTD stunning beauty bouquet image by ckseven

Another scientific study showed that flowers make people happy immediately upon receiving them; & that happiness lasts for a long time, & get’s ‘paid forward’, as those happy people then tend to make more connections with other people.

     MAY-08067.jpg phlox image by Chatcat_02

Senior citizens who receive flowers experience less depression than those who don't, according to - researchers from Rutgers University & elsewhere - & also score higher on memory tests.  They make the effort to seek out conversations with other people, after receiving flowers, as well.

Umm... might want to leave some room to work, there! Wink

When flowers and plants are present in the workplace, they’ve found that people are better-able to perform their jobs – being more productive and coming up with more-creative solutions to problems at hand... which in turn reduces workplace stress.  Many other studies have confirmed multiple health & wellness benefits related to flowers.

So, if there’s a health-related “May Day” afoot, try some flowers – in addition to your friendship (but, find out if your recipient may be allergic to the real ones, first – then go for photos/cards/posters & such)!  Pass out some flowers this May… & all the other months, too.

Of course, looking at cute pets can help, too… but that’s another post. Smile Dog face Red rose

Great Poetry Reading Day (April 28)

    April 28th is…

    Great Poetry Reading Day

    The year's at the spring

    And day's at the morn;

    Morning's at seven;

    The hillside's dew-pearled;

    The lark's on the wing;

    The snail's on the thorn;

    God's in His heaven -

    All's right with the world!

    ~Robert Browning

You can find lots of great poetry to read at the Poetry Foundation.

If you’re like me (and, if you are, may your higher power help ya! LOL), & are wondering “what about all of the BAD poetry out there??”, there’s also a “Bad Poetry Reading Day” for all of that – held on August 18th.

Cases of Swine Flu in US & Mexico (April 2009)

Cases of Swine Flu in US & Mexico

Numerous cases of swine flu have been found in Mexico recently (beginning March 18th) with at least 59 deaths; & now (as of 9:00 AM on April 26th) the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has confirmed 20 human cases of swine flu in the U.S., as well.

These are the places in the U.S. where there are confirmed cases, so far:  California (7), Kansas (2), New York City (8), Ohio (1), & Texas (2).  At this time only two of the 20 cases in the US have been hospitalized and all have recovered.  Investigations are ongoing,; & are still in the early stages – more details on that are available HERE.

This particular strain of influenza virus is unique because it is a combination of genes from swine, bird, and human influenza viruses. Infected individuals report flu-like symptoms of fever, aches and pains, sore throats, coughing and trouble breathing.

To learn more about swine flu and the CDC’s investigation, visit the CDC Swine Flu website. You can read their full advisory, HERE (PDF).

Real-time updates on the investigation are also available, by following CDC on Twitter.

The CDC is advising people with feverish respiratory illnesses to stay home from work or school & utilize frequent hand-washing, & remember to cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing/sneezing (as it can spread through the air) & throw the tissue in the trash, as well as limiting contact with others in order to avoid spreading infections (including influenza and other respiratory illnesses) to others in their communities. They remind us to Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth, as it spreads germs.  (More flu-prevention tips are available HERE.) They haven’t yet recommended that people avoid travel to affected areas at this time. They have recommendations posted HERE & HERE to will help travelers reduce risk of infection and stay healthy; & will post updated related travel recommendations HERE, as well.

The World Heath Organization (WHO) is monitoring international cases. More on those may be found at their Epidemic and Pandemic Alert and Response (EPR) page, HERE.

PS  FREE trees Island with a palm tree planted:  The first film in the new Disneynature series, “Earth”, was released this week.  Disney is advertising that they’ll plant a tree for each ticket that’s bought during the film’s opening week.  It’s supposed to be a pretty good movie – a story of three different animal families (Polar Bears, African Elephants, & Humpback Whales)… narrated by James Earl Jones & directed by the creative team who worked on the Planet Earth series.  I’m sure they don’t need my “plug” here (& I’m not much for ‘advertising’, generally); but I thought I’d throw it out there for whomever may be interested.  Island with a palm tree

    Siblings Day (April 10)

    April 10th is…

    Siblings Day

    SIBLINGSDAY-1.jpg picture by GraphEmp

Siblings Day is an opportunity to acknowledge the importance of the sibling-relationship & express appreciation & recognition to our brothers and sisters for everything they’ve brought to our lives, & perhaps to heal old wounds & conflicts with them.  It’s also a day to remember with love and gratitude those siblings who no longer are with us.

Like Mother's and Father's Days, Siblings Day follows the same spirit and tradition – just for brothers & sisters, instead.  It can be celebrated by doing similar things… such as sending a card or letter, making a phone call, getting together & spending time together, going out to eat, playing games &/or sharing remembrances & hugs & the like.  You could also send a postcard:

Send a free Siblings Day ePostcard [click]

Claudia A. Evart, who is a freelance paralegal in Manhattan, NY, founded Siblings Day after coming up with the idea on her 40th birthday, in 1996.  Claudia’s own two siblings both died at early ages of tragic accidents:  her sister, Lisette, was 19 when she died in an auto accident when she was travelling abroad (in 1972), & her brother, Alan, died from a slip-&-fall accident in his home when he was 36 (in 1987).

April 10th was chosen as the date for Siblings day because it’s the birthdate of Claudia’s late sister, Lisette.

Thirty-one states have officially established Siblings Day.  Once it’s been universally established, Claudia plans to present annual “Brothers & Sisters Awards” for caregivers of disabled siblings, & also utilize her Siblings Day Foundation to become a national resource call-in center for sibling-bereavement & other sibling issues, & to support family organizations which provide similar sibling services.

    April 08

SAAM Day of Action (Apr. 8th, ‘09)

    Today Wednesday, April 8th , 2009 is…

    SAAM Day of Action

APRIL is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM)

The SAAM Day of Action (formerly A Day to End Sexual Violence), is a day to focus awareness on sexual violence prevention.

    This year’s SAAM theme is…

    Prevent Sexual Violence...in our workplaces.

    The SAAM slogan is…

    Respect Works!

Behaviors which involve physical contact are usually called abuse, rape, or sexual assault.  All forms of sexual violence can and do happen in the workplace.  The abuser or offender can be of the same or opposite sex, a supervisor, an agent of the employer, a supervisor in another area, a co-worker, or a non-employee.

Sexual harassment & violence in the workplace are not about sex but about power & control.  Learn more about the underlying dynamics:

View the Workplace Power & Control Wheel

Victims of sexual assault at work may have difficulties meeting ongoing work demands in the aftermath of an assault – including decreased work functioning, sometimes for up to 8 months after the attack – and nearly 50% of rape victims lose their jobs or are forced to quit in the aftermath of the crime.

Prevention of workplace violence includes setting standards of respect for others in the workplace & for responding to & reporting acts of sexual harassment and violence.  Businesses can also support their local rape crisis centers through donations of time and/or money; &, by showing they care, others in the community will be inspired to learn more about how to help.

National Cushing's Syndrome Awareness Day (April 8)

    April 8th is…

    National Cushing's Syndrome Awareness Day

Cushing’s Syndrome (AKA hypercortisolism or hyperadrenocorticism) is an hormonal/ endocrine or disorder which is caused by over-exposure of the body’s tissues to high levels of the hormone cortisol.

Between10 & 15 people per million have Cushing’s. – most commonly affecting adults between the ages of 20 & 50.  Common symptoms include abnormal weight gain, skin changes, fatigue, diabetes, high blood pressure, and depression.  The list of possible symptoms is very long – you can view more, here (where it’s divided into several categorical pages).

Over production of cortisol is commonly associated with the treatment of asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus. Delayed treatment of Cushing’s Syndrome significantly reduces treatment options, such as radiation therapy. That’s why it’s important for both doctors and patients to heighten their awareness of it.

April 8th was chosen as NCSAD because it’s the birthday of Harvey Cushing (1869-1939) – the American physician, surgeon and endocrinologist who discovered it & first reported it in 1932.

    This year’s WHD theme is:

Save lives. Make hospitals safe in emergencies.

Previous WHD themes included “Protecting Health from Climate Change” (2008), “International Health Security” (2007), “Working Together for Health” (2006) & “Make every mother and child count” (2005).

    WHO/Shareef Sarhan

Having safe hospitals in all areas of the world is important for everyday emergencies – but it’s even more critical when disaster strikes.  This year’s WHD aims at making hospitals safe when disasters like earthquakes, typhoons & hurricanes, conflict-related crises, & other disasters strike.  Focus is given to securing structures & property against damage & preparedness planning, including the proper training of personell.
